Can alcoholism be cured? Can it be treated?

There currently is no cure for alcoholism. The possibility of a relapse hovers over even those alcoholics who have been sober for years, which is why an alcoholic must continue to avoid all alcoholic beverages. The positive news, however, is that alcoholism can be treated.

The “bad” news about that good news is that recovering from alcoholism is generally something alcoholics cannot do on their own. They need help. More good news: a lot of help is available. Sophisticated, caring treatment programs, for example, use both counseling and medications to help a person stop drinking. Participation in 12-step recovery programs or attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous can help individuals take giant strides toward achieving and maintaining recovery. With appropriate support and treatment, many people are able to embark on the long recovery from alcoholism and begin to rebuild their lives.

The goal of any treatment program is to help individuals recognize there are other options – alternatives to drinking – that can help them achieve sobriety and maintain it. Part of this process involves learning new skills and recognizing how to incorporate them into daily living. In many cases, for example, those battling the ravages of alcohol discover that the key to recovery is in making better choices – rather than giving in to situations and relationships that may trigger addictive behaviors.
